"I know it's not a flashy
promotion like you'd expect from a
multi-national corporation,"
said Tom Rall, flea market manager
and owner of the web site, "but
it's truly a sincere thank you to
the thousands of exhibitors and
millions of customers who've come to
the market since we started in the
spring of 1984.
"Each and every one has
contributed to making The Flea
Market at Eastern Market a unique
place and I am blessed to work
there," Rall concluded.

special experience."

Tourists
Return to Eastern Market

Tourists flocked to Eastern
Market and the tent stall of Jeweler
Larry Gallo in March. They came with
a tear sheet from the slick
Southwest Airlines in-flight
magazine, Spirit, in hand,
reported Gallo.
The magazine featured DC spots
including the Spy Museum and
National Cherry Blossom Festival and
devoted a feature page to Eastern
Market, with a picture of a bustling
crowd inside the new East Hall and
insert photos of Gallo's
"historic coin cufflinks."
"I didn't even know about it
until people started turning up with
the story," marveled Gallo
about the piece, subtitled
"Bargain Hunter."
Also touted in Spirit were
"impressionistic scenes of D.C.
by Zakhar Sasim" and "old
stereoviews of the District"
sold by Rall.

An Eastern Market walking tour
will take place Sunday, April 27
(10 - 11:30 am and 1:30 - 3 pm) and
is part of a full weekend of similar
tours sponsored by WalkingTown, DC.
The tour meets at the Eastern Market
metro stop plaza.
Led by Carole Kolker and presented
by Cultural Tourism DC, the tour
will "trace the evolution of
the 135-year-old Eastern Market from
the Navy Yard to its present
location, a Victorian-style
masterpiece designed by political
radical and architect Adolph Cluss.
Hear stories about market culture
and how, despite a ravaging fire in
2007, local efforts have persisted
in maintaining this vital
neighborhood hub, where shoppers are
greeted by the familiar faces of
generations of vendors."
This inaugural walk featuring
Eastern Market is supported in part
by The Capitol Hill Restoration
Society, The Flea Market at Eastern
Market and the Capitol Hill
Community Foundation.
